Faculty name:    Science           Faculty Leader:    Mr B Heard

Explanation of what the faculty covers:

Science at Kirkby College is taught as a combined course of Biology, Chemistry and Physics.   We currently deliver Chemistry and Biology A-levels as well as a Level 3 BTEC in Biomedical Science.

The faculty also delivers Health and Social Care courses at KS4 and 5.

What we do at Key Stage 3

Key Stage 3 Science is taught over a 2-year period.  It has strong practical and skills based elements to it and is designed to prepare students for the challenges of Key Stage 4.

What we do at Key Stage 4

We follow the Edexcel GCSE (9-1) Combined Science specification and it is taught over a 3-year period. Unlike previous years there is no coursework element with assessment being entirely exam based.  Practical skills are assessed through questioning in the exams and to allow for this a set of ‘core’ practicals must be taught.  This is great for students as it increases the amount of practical activities they will do.

What we do at Key Stage 5

A-level Biology is delivered through the OCR Biology A specification and has strong practical and research based elements.  Chemistry is delivered through the AQA specification and again has a strong practical focus.

BTEC Biomedical Science is a coursework based qualification and continues to be both popular and successful.
