To support all students who have accepted a place and will be starting at Kirkby College, we run several events throughout the year, together with providing opportunities to visit the academy. The aim of these activities is to make sure that all children are as prepared to make the step into secondary education as they can be, ready for joining us in year 7.

Detailed below are the ways in which we make the transition from primary school to Kirkby College as smooth as possible.

Primary school events

Local feeder primary schools are invited to take part in a range of subject events and experiences as well as having access to our specialist facilities and teaching.

Visits to primary schools

Members of our senior leadership team visit feeder primary schools throughout the year to meet, students, parents and staff. We frequently attend primary parents evenings as well as delivering assemblies and Q&A sessions for students. Heads of house and the learning support team also work with year 6 teachers to find out about all of the children transferring to Kirkby College to ensure that their transition is smooth.

Kirkby College offers an enhanced transition programme for those year 6 students who will find the move especially challenging.

Masterclasses

We run an active programme of events for primary school pupils to enable them to experience life in a secondary school setting and to take part in masterclasses offered by all curriculum subjects. The masterclasses range from creating a ‘play in a day’, to computer animation and celebrating Commonwealth Day.

These events are on offer to all years 4, 5 and 6 pupils and can be booked by parents or by any primary school who wish to try these classes out.

Transition days

Each year Kirkby College welcomes year 6 students into the academy for two days in July. On these days students meet their tutor, members of their tutor group and experience lessons. This ensures that students feel confident in joining the academy in September and decreases the anxiety that students feel about the move to secondary school.

Academy in Action days

We run a series of Academy in Action days throughout the academic year, which are open to pupils across all age groups.

Parents and students can visit the academy at these events to see our students in lessons as part of a typical academy day.

Book an event
