Healthy Schools Page
Kirkby College is committed to providing an environment in which healthy eating, physical activity and emotional health and wellbeing are promoted and supported. We achieve this by:
- Providing a high quality PSCHE programme which encompasses sex and relationships education and drugs education.
- Physical Education is a core subject for all students. Students are encouraged to be active at breaks and lunchtimes and to join extra-curricular clubs.
- Food and nutrition is taught at an appropriate level at each key stage through food technology, PSCHE, Science and Tutor Time. The aim is for students to make healthy and informed food choices.
- The school canteen follow and meet the mandatory school food guidelines. The canteen provide a wide range of foods to give students a broad and balanced diet.
- Pastoral support systems are in place to ensure students emotional health and wellbeing is well cared for.
School Drinks Policy
From September 2016, after a consultation with staff, students and parents, Kirkby College banned all Fizzy Drinks, Energy Drinks and Drinks with a high sugar content. Students are encouraged to drink water throughout the school day. The school has two water dispensers located in the dining room and Physical Education department. Students are encouraged to bring a water bottle which they may fill up before school, during break and lunchtimes to keep them hydrated throughout the day.
Breakfast:
Breakfast is an important meal that should provide 25% of a child’s energy requirement and supports students to be ready to learn at the start of each day. We therefore ask parents/carers to encourage their child to eat breakfast in order to make a positive start to the day and enable them to focus and concentrate in morning lesson.
